In the summer and autumn of 1942, when the gas chambers in the Majdanek camp had not yet been activated, the Germans shot and burned about 3,000 people in the Krępiec Forest, although the exact number is not known. The mass executions were the result of the liquidation of the ghetto at Majdan Tatarski. In the 1970s, a memorial was erected in the same place to commemorate those who lost their lives there.
